question about the astral senses exercises.

I working on developing the astral senses (First Month, days 27-31 of the spiritual warfare program) but im having a problem with my visualization kicking in with the other senses. For example, I can "smell" pineapple, but to smell it i have to mentally see it. it does it automatically. Did anyone else have this problem?
and im having trouble smelling and tasting some things at all. I had very minor luck with apples and pineapple, but things like tomato soup, i couldnt taste at all, i could only make a mental image of it while trying to taste/smell it.
Any help would be appreciated.
