Interested in Developing Other types of Synesthesia. Any Advice?

Ever since I first heard about synesthesia, it has fascinated me and made me wish that I could experience it. Thanks to the Joy of Satan website, I've learned that I can.

Anyways, besides the visual-audio type of synesthesia mentioned in the meditations section, I've also been wanting to develop alphanumeric and other types of synesthesia. The most common type is where a person sees specific colors overlapping their associated letters and numbers. I've also been quite interested in personality alphanumeric synesthesia. This is where a person perceives alphanumeric symbols as having certain personalities, and this ability can even extend to perceiving inanimate objects as having personalities. As an example, someone with this ability might say that t seems like a very humourous fellow, p is a very dignified gentlemen, and z is a weird and eccentric lady.

Anyways, I'm very interested in all the types of synesthesia and I'm sure that there's probably quite a few different varieties. So, does anyone know how to develop alphanumeric types of synesthesia or how to go about developing any synesthesia in general? Also, when I do the synesthesia meditation listed on the Joy of Satan website, is there any particular manner in which I should "try" to see the colors, or is there no real right or wrong way? Does it involve the use of imagination? Visual imagination isn't necessarily my strong point!

Thanks in advance for any insight! Perhaps the Joy of Satan ministry should create an extended section in their meditations just for synesthesia?

Whenever I practiced the ability of synesthesia I would always listen to a Metal Band like Deicide and would see the sounds through my third eye. The strings from the guitar always appeared as electric zig zag shaped lines. Depending on the emotion and the song I also noticed my personality would change as the colors I would start to see would change also.

Hey again everyone! If you're interested in developing your own synesthesic alphabet, check this out! I was looking a little on the Internet and I found this essay where the author talks a little about developing your very own synesthesic alphabet! He mostly focuses on memory techniques to learn foreign languages, but it is still interesting in its own respect, if you want to see colored letters. The URL is: http://www.esnips.com/doc/31089b25-2f73 ... hesia-2005

Also, to the person who responded to my previous post, you said you see these colored lines in your third eye? Does that mean it is necessary for my third eye to be open before I try to see music and sounds? I'd hate to be wasting my time! Anyways, since alphanumeric color synesthesia is supposed to be pretty common, I hope it won't be too difficult for me to learn it!

To see with your third eye you close your eyes and "look up" with your eyes while your eye lids are shut. It also helps to be in a trance as well, the main thing is to be relaxed. I followed the instructions from the jos:

So yes you should have your third eye open and should practice with looking through your third eye. It doesn't take that long to do. Seeing through your third eye is useful for many purposes.

Okay, I've got another question, probably my last one. So, once I learn to see these colors and shapes with my third eye, will I be able to see music and sound without closing my physical eyes or doing anything else? I'm trying to go for the authentic projector synesthete's experience instead of the associator synesthete's one. Basically, whenever I hear something, I want to truly see it as colors and shapes, rather than simply associate it with a specific type of color and shape in my mind.

I'm also rather pleased to say that I think I may have had some slight success in developing grapheme (alphanumeric) to color synesthesia. I was playing a video game with my siblings and their friend when I focused on these particular words. I then saw these colors in the letters of those words! I am rather certain that it was indeed a synesthesic experience because I noticed that identical letters had the same color, even in different words! It seems like it works better with light letters on a darker background. I also noticed that it seemed to only work on the words that I had focused on. I'm sure I'm nowhere close to fully developing this ability, but it's an encouraging start! What do you think? Anybody else going to give it a try!?

I also remember this one other time of how I saw a mirage of colors in these white letters on the black background of a web page. When that happened, I wondered to myself if something was wrong with my monitor or it was me! Unlike the last time though, I seemed to have a difficult time recognizing any consistency in the colors of the letters.

I have not gone that far into devoloping synesthesia. The lines and zig zag shaped lines I saw are how I have seen the sounds. It may be totally different from how you perceive it but I would imagine it being similar. Whenever I listen to music and if I'am tuning in my third eye I can see colors of the sounds only with my eyes closed. As far as seeing with your eyes open, I wouldn't know.

Thank you very much for responding to all of my questions op52t. I think I might also be getting a little further with my synesthesic alphabet because associations are starting to form in my head. Let me list some of those associations.

a - red
b - blue
c - yellow
d - black
e - cream (whitish)
p - pink (I tend to think of it as hot pink.)
k - burgundy
u - green (like green water)
z - black and white stripes? (like a zebra)
l - could be indigo

These letter associations seem pretty stable in my mind, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of them changed. I remember how there was kind of a conflict in my mind over d between black and green. It would seem that black is the victor. I have also developed number color associations. Here's what I have.

0 - dark green (makes me think of money)
1 - yellow
2 - red (tend to think of it as darker than a)

If my progress is any indication, others might be able to develop this ability rather quickly too. For anyone who may wish to acquire this synesthesia, I hope my own results might encourage them. You probably won't have the same colors for each letter or number though. It's best to allow the letters to "define themselves".

One of the things I like about this synesthesia is that it is best practiced with the eyes open, slowly reading or even focusing on words. That's not to say you couldn't possibly do it another way though. I actually made my mental associations just by simply thinking about the letters and numbers. It also might help to try to "feel" the letters or numbers, emotionally speaking.

You know, I've kind of acquired an urge to be a collector of synesthesia types. So in a way, I hope I might be an authority on the subject in the future. Anyways, if you have anything else interesting to say about the topic, feel free to share.
