Cyril and Methodius are always credited for their “contribution” in codifying the slavic language. History books describe Slavs pretty akin to cavemen when it comes to language before these 2 showed up. But as always there has to be something going on behind the scenes. So did they really help the slavs or did they just steal their already existing language and turned it into some amalgamation of who knows what just to spread Christianity?

You are onto something but it isn't that simple. As brother Helleniser said, the reason for creating the alphabet was to translate the xtian texts and spread the cancer.

C & M didn't create the cyrilic script however, it was their disciples Klement and Naum. The alphabet they made is the glagolitic, a strange looking swirly script less practical, less based on greek and significantly more complicated.

Slavic tribes had literacy reserved to the priestly class mostly and had a runic script (in chronicles mentioned as "црти и рески") which was for the most part written on wood so in the campaign that saw an almost complete destruction of all temples and the slaughter of all priests it was lost to time except for some rare inscriptions in stone.

Do some more research if this topic really interests you. It is always rewarding to dig a bit deeper.
