Vatican critical of Avatar's spiritual message

The Vatican's newspaper and its radio station have given a lukewarm reception to the film Avatar, criticizing it for its "spiritualism linked to the worship of nature."

A red-carpet preview of Canadian James Cameron's 3-D blockbuster was held in Rome ahead of its wide release Friday in Italy.

The film is set on the fictional planet of Pandora, where humans are creating an environmentally destructive mining colony.

Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano devoted three articles to Avatar in its Sunday editions but said Cameron's plot was "bland" and unoriginal.

"He tells the story without going deep into it, and ends up falling into sappiness," it said.

The newspaper had praise for the film's visual effects, but said the story failed to touch the heart.

"So much stupefying, enchanting technology, but few genuine emotions," the reviewer wrote.

Pope fights neopaganism
Vatican Radio said Avatar "cleverly winks at all those pseudo-doctrines that turn ecology into the religion of the millennium."

Pope Benedict XVI has spoken of the need to protect the environment, but warned against "neopaganism" and the danger of turning nature into a "new divinity."

In Avatar, "nature is no longer a creation to defend but a divinity to worship," the radio reviewer said.

Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said the reviews reflect the Pope's views on confusing nature and spirituality. However, they are independent film reviews with no input from the pontiff, he added.

The Vatican newspaper recently had praise for the long-running TV show, The Simpsons. But it was famously dismissive of the film version of The Da Vinci Code, a criticism that made very little difference to the film's box office.

Avatar has earned more than $1 billion US at the box office so far and looks set to become the highest-grossing film of all time, beating Cameron's previous record with Titanic.

These idiots just never learn.

Years ago when that branch of the Vatican now known as "Congregation for the Perpetuation of the Faith" was called "Congregation of the Holy Office" (name changed in the early 1960's because "Holy Office" equated with "Inquisition" and was turning people off for obvious reasons) -- also, incidentally, headed up for years, by Ratzinger, the current pope -- they had a list of proscribed books. This guaranteed these "condemned" books made it to the top of the best-seller list.

Same with the movies. Avatar (which I haven't yet been able to see) from what I've heard is a wonderful, top-rate movie and another feather in James "Titanic" Cameron's cap. And, for what it's worth, with a name like Cameron, he's probably not a jew! (Although they do all too often usurp our names.)

Every time something like this happens, I have a good chuckle. Their last-ditch efforts to patch the ever widening holes in their leaking ship, which has provided the material means -- aside from the hostile aliens, thoughtforms, etc -- to keep their stranglehold on humanity, fail and fail miserably, and have the opposite of the intended effect.

These papal rants amply illustrate the underlying foolishness: often, if you want to de-value something, make it appear inconsequential, the best thing is to ignore its existence, not give it credence, "don't feed the beast" sort of thing. But what does His Unholiness do? Vomits forth idiot remarks to the entire world.

The movie is already a hit; after this, it's going to be an even bigger one!

<td val[/IMG]LOL I couldn't have said that better. Although I don't believe this is just from the Christians, I think "the bitching" could be coming more from those who are non-religious. Whoever says that Avatar is a bad movie, is probably an asshole.

Isn't it funny,

I've seen all the movies that the Vatican have banned. I even read the books then ban ! I don't give a fuck about Ratzinger. This guy is stucked is his own passed like many old morrons in Europa. He has been raised in Nazi germany in the cult of the Fuhrer and has allways worshipped Pie XII, his model inside the church.
Here in Europa, we all know that Vatican is just like Delaware in the US ! It's an off shore washing machine for international governments black ops and an allied of the UN and the CIA.  In the 1980'th it's clear that russian KGB agents have infiltraded it and poisonned the pope John Paul the first. It was easy for russia, while the Vatican open their doors to orthodox christian churches allready under KGB survey in soviet union ! There is no more soviet union, but the Vatican is still a place of corruption and underground op for international affairs.
Tooday it passes by Spain and the Opus Dei. Another monney washing machine that carry black op monney from US secret services.

Never mind this political shit ! I've seen for example "The tomb" with Antonio Banderas, banned by Vatican, look at it in block busters. It's too funny ! Of course Dan Brown books and Da Vinci Code. It's interesting, the sacred feminine that is for any satanist : Ishtar or Astaroth, mother goodess for earth. But Dan Brown scenario is in fact very superficial in his book. Look better for Baigent, Leight, Lincoln so known HBHG. It's much more serious ! The Vatican seems not to care about this book ... They look on what have popularity.  And now they want to ban Cameron's Avatar !  Nuts, they ban the truth. Until the day, the truth shall ban them and Roma ! This day is known even in John's revelation, it's called the Armageddon !

well my friend , it may have been expensive but it was worth it! I wonder if anyone has tried looking at this movie from a spiritual satanic point of view? ( and by this I mean our true history! no offence of course) every comment is about how the vatican is so corrupted ( and it is , I hate those fuckers) but why don't they want us seeing it? because it encourages the worship of nature? maybe , but then again most book stores are filled with books on this very subject , that we must respect nature! but the vatican does nothing about that. I think , and it's a long shot but the whole avatar storyline makes me think of our own history. the humans on pandora (=the gods) looking for unobtanium (=Gold). they connect with the Na'vi(=early humans) and suddenly one of them developes a sympathy for them; jake sully (=Satan) He realises that they shouldn't be destroyed and chooses the side of the na'vi (= humans) eventually ends up leading them into battle with the enemy humans!( =the enemy gods) think about it. it's a beautiful movie if you look at it this way and in some way a great tribute to our history (eventhough it may not have been intended this way! :) )
