What are you looking for, and for what purpose is the stone to be used?
I have a large collection of polished stones. In finding ones I find to be of stronger energy then others, I use my left hand (the recieving hand, which picks up psychic energy better then the right in finding the "right" stone).
It helps to go into a store that specializes in polished and natural stones and quartz.
Some stones have brighter and different energies, even within the same kind. You have to dig around.
Some stones that feel pretty strong to me:
Moldavite
Lemurian Quartz
Onyx
Fluorite
Clear quartz
Amethyst
Sodalite
Obsidian
Amber
...this is not a complete list, only something to get you started.
If you are psychic, or are sensitive to energies, the first two on the list are pretty powerful, but they may not be appropriate for your workings/spells unless you program them. They are also hard to find and can be a bit pricier then the other more common ones.
The bigger the stone, the less polished and more natural it is (that is, with its natural rock face) the more "powerful" it will feel, no matter what kind of stone it is.
Don't wash your stone in water and soap, it wears it away. Don't leave it in water either.
