Houston County [/IMG]Georgia’s most progressive county</em>,” but practicing your spiritual beliefs in the Centerville city limits, may land you in jail.Courtney Bibb, owner of Energy Among Us, a spiritual bookstore, gift shop, and wellness center in Centerville, GA, is being threatened by the city to stop illegal activities taking place in her store. No, these activities don’t involve drugs, prostitution or gambling. According to Bibb, a former Macon police officer, she is being targeted for practicing her religious beliefs. Her store is accused of violating Centerville’s archaic ordinance, outlawing the practice of psychic reading, fortune telling, palm reading, and other spiritual activities. In a certified letter from the city of Centerville, Ms. Bibb was notified that her business was operating illegally. Ms. Bibb who runs a "spiritual wellness" business claims the City of Centerville is running her out of town because of an unconstitutional ordinance that prohibits "fortunetelling, phrenology, astrology, clairvoyance, palmistry, spiritualism or other kindred practices, businesses or professions where a charge is made or a donation is accepted for the services." Courtney Bibb says she secured a business license and the mayor attended the ribbon-cutting for her shop, Energy Among Us, in February.
Plaintiff operates a business that focuses on spiritual wellness," Bibb says in her federal complaint. "Plaintiff sells books, candles, incense, crystals, tarot cards, angel cards, and other items relating to spiritual wellness and healing.
In addition, plaintiff offers various services related to spiritual wellness, including tarot card readings or therapy, or therapy, palm reading, group meditation, group energy healing, chakra or energy alignment, reflexology, reiki, dream interpretation, and crystal ball readings."
Apparently, things went well The Macon Telegraph ran a story about her in its March 28 edition. The article mentioned a Mind, Body and Spirit Expo that Bibb plans to host this Saturday. This expo will include "sessions and demonstrations on meditation techniques, life coaching, organic gardening and soap making, drum circles, tai chi and reflexology."
On April 12, Bibb says, she received a letter from the Centerville city clerk, stating that her business violates City Ordinance Section 6-1, "Fortunetelling and similar practices prohibited." The clerk told her to close down her business, she says.

Bibb says the letter stated: "A review of your business license application, filled out by you, describes your business as a 'wellness center/bookstore.' Had you disclosed the entire nature of your business at the time you applied for a license, any lack of awareness, or misunderstanding of the applicable city ordinance could have been cleared up." “I’m not allowed to practice spiritualism. No meditation, no prayer, no healing circles…I can’t do any of that.” Bibb told the Sun News.Failure to comply with the city ordinance could allow Centerville to close Bibb's store.  Bibb could also face penalties of up to 60 days in jail, if she continues to charge customers for her services.Centerville, GA Mayor John Harley, supports the city’s decision. He charges that Energy Among Us is in violation of city ordinances, and the store's business license is for a wellness center/bookstore, not psychic readings. City officials also believe that Ms. Bibb did not use full disclosure when she applied for her business license. In addition to trying to save her business, Courtney Bibb believes she also needs to take a stand for religious freedom. She is fearful that the city ordinance could be used to persecute any religious or spiritual beliefs that city leaders deem to be inappropriate.Energy Among Us is located at: 100 N. Houston Lake Blvd Suite S, Centerville GA 31028, across from the Galleria Mall.

You might be surprised at just how many cities/counties/states/provinces and countries have these antiquated laws. Some have got around them by not formally charging for services but instead accepting "donations" ... not a very good way to run a business.

It doesn't take much to discover how deep the rabbit hole goes ... makes one think that if we eliminated the technology of today there's no way you could distinguish our time from the Middle Ages.

What, thats really really sucks, at least its not illegal in Michigan I am grateful to be able to drive about 3 miles and be at an occult store where I can get black candles or just about any thing, WTF I didn't think any of this stuff was illegal anywhere in the United States or Europe for that matter I guess I learn something new everyday, one more reason we should all curse the enemy and be serious about spiritual warfare (see http://indigonation.yolasite.com/spirit ... ituals.php everyone should do their part) I bet they might allow books on witchcraft at the local library (seeing as you say that's a more "progressive area) she could use that as an argument since they allow that why can't she be allowed to do her thing, I really though think this law violates the separation of Church and State so she has a right to sue, and the courts probably have to uphold, and grant her freedom to run her business whether they want to or not.

<td val[/IMG]I know in my local library, they don't allow any books of Witchcraft to grave their shelves. It all has to be about afterlife, bibles, Feng Shui, and books where people told the future. Even these books are outdated.   The occult books that do come to the library, even if they adhere strictly to the donation guidlines are given away to a used book store, or sold at a massive Library booksale that is held only two times a year.

That sucks, They even have the Satanic Bible at my local library and a whole shelf dedicated to all sorts of occult things, I think pretty much anything could make it in, even in rural conservative small town libraries I have been in they usually have at least a few if not several occult books, maybe in the south they have a different definition for the word "progressive" than what I am used to, I don't know, what I do know from traveling through the south (including the bible belt) is its extremely more blatent in regards to xtian things, than even the extremist fundy places on the west side of my state. even just traveling through I can tell that and the religious stuff seems to be everywhere, I even saw people praying before meals at fast food restaurants. Michigan is generally a moderate to somewhat conservative state. My state has plenty of very "conservative" xtian areas" and a few "very progressive" areas but nothing like what I was seeing in the south (I chose to live in one of the progressive ones since I needed to get out of where I was and had a choice of where to go but couldn't leave the state since I am on SSI the reason for that and this may be helpful advice to any of you needing to move anywhere any time soon in general liberals are way easier to deal with than far right xtian people at least for me and much more easily convinced of the truth so seek out terms like "progressive" liberal, and open minded etc when referring to a location you are considering at the very least it will mean you wont be hassled anywhere near as much for your beliefs, and are more likely to meet like minded people. Just so you know though the kikes control both sides. There is no left or right in America its only kike at least in mainstream groups and these terms are used to describe plenty more than politics, though its not so much with certain individuals in either camp. It must be really bad down there maybe the word conservative has a different meaning for them as well.

The occult books that do come to the library, even if they adhere strictly to the donation guidlines are given away to a used book store, or sold at a massive Library booksale that is held only two times a year.

You might be surprised at just how many cities/counties/states/provinces and
countries have these antiquated laws. Some have got around them by not formally
charging for services but instead accepting "donations" ... not a very good way
to run a business.

Houston County may call itself “Georgia’s most progressive county,” but
practicing your spiritual beliefs in the Centerville city limits, may land you

in jail.
Courtney Bibb, owner of Energy Among Us, a spiritual bookstore, gift shop, and

wellness center in Centerville, GA, is being threatened by the city to stop
illegal activities taking place in her store.
No, these activities don’t involve drugs, prostitution or gambling. According
to

Bibb, a former Macon police officer, she is being targeted for practicing her
religious beliefs. Her store is accused of violating Centerville’s archaic
ordinance, outlawing the practice of psychic reading, fortune telling, palm
reading, and other spiritual activities.
In a certified letter from the city of Centerville, Ms. Bibb was notified that

her business was operating illegally.
Ms. Bibb who runs a "spiritual wellness" business claims the City of
Centerville

is running her out of town because of an unconstitutional ordinance that
prohibits "fortunetelling, phrenology, astrology, clairvoyance, palmistry,
spiritualism or other kindred practices, businesses or professions where a
charge is made or a donation is accepted for the services."
Courtney Bibb says she secured a business license and the mayor attended the
ribbon-cutting for her shop, Energy Among Us, in February.
Plaintiff operates a business that focuses on spiritual wellness," Bibb says in

her federal complaint. "Plaintiff sells books, candles, incense, crystals,
tarot

cards, angel cards, and other items relating to spiritual wellness and healing.

In addition, plaintiff offers various services related to spiritual wellness,
including tarot card readings or therapy, or therapy, palm reading, group
meditation, group energy healing, chakra or energy alignment, reflexology,
reiki, dream interpretation, and crystal ball readings."

Apparently, things went well The Macon Telegraph ran a story about her in its
March 28 edition. The article mentioned a Mind, Body and Spirit Expo that Bibb

plans to host this Saturday. This expo will include "sessions and
demonstrations

on meditation techniques, life coaching, organic gardening and soap making,
drum

circles, tai chi and reflexology."

On April 12, Bibb says, she received a letter from the Centerville city clerk,

stating that her business violates City Ordinance Section 6-1, "Fortunetelling

and similar practices prohibited." The clerk told her to close down her
business, she says.

Bibb says the letter stated: "A review of your business license application,
filled out by you, describes your business as a 'wellness center/bookstore.'
Had

you disclosed the entire nature of your business at the time you applied for a

license, any lack of awareness, or misunderstanding of the applicable city
ordinance could have been cleared up."
“I’m not allowed to practice spiritualism. No meditation, no prayer, no healing

circles…I can’t do any of that.” Bibb told the Sun News.
Failure to comply with the city ordinance could allow Centerville to
close Bibb's store. Bibb could also face penalties of up to 60 days in jail,
if

she continues to charge customers for her services.
Centerville, GA Mayor John Harley, supports the city’s decision. He charges
that Energy Among Us is in violation of city ordinances, and the store's
business license is for a wellness center/bookstore, not psychic readings. City

officials also believe that Ms. Bibb did not use full disclosure when she
applied for her business license.
In addition to trying to save her business, Courtney Bibb believes she also
needs to take a stand for religious freedom. She is fearful that the city
ordinance could be used to persecute any religious or spiritual beliefs that
city leaders deem to be inappropriate.
Energy Among Us is located at: 100 N. Houston Lake Blvd Suite S, Centerville GA
