"The Wicker Man"

There is a great film, made in 1973 and still available, called "The Wicker Man." All my witch friends love it, it is a guilty pleasure because it shows a modern-day pagan village in Scotland, and the pagans don't get burnt in the end! It is quite good--Christopher Lee plays "Lord Summerisle" the leader of the community. Although a lesser known film, I once read an interview where he declared it was his favorite role of all time. He certainly does a great job. A very satisfying film indeed, for those who are tired of this sadly Xianized world and long for a different environment. You will watch it over and over, it is very good. It also has great pagan songs in it. I watch this whenever I am feeling sick of the world as we know it...cheers me up every time. The ending is very uncommon, I'll bet you will cheer.

Oh,yes, do NOT watch the re-make with Nicholas Cage! No, this is the one--made in 1973 starring Christopher Lee and Brit Ekland. World of difference...I heard they even slanted the re-make so that the pagans were made to look bad! Hollywood, BAH!

This movie is a good example of the extremes of religion, as well as a detailed source of how Wicca really is..and not all it portrays itself to be nowadays. The villagers very much act like brainwashed Xians in the days of the inquisition, but they just aren't as aggressive with the bible thumping attitude.

And yes, this film very much does take extremes, as someone has pointed out--it is really a guilty pleasure for a pagan. If the Christians had not killed millions of our people, maybe I could shed a tear for the victim in the film--but like you, I find the film to be refreshing.

And remember, this was ONLY a film--I would not personally advocate anyone killing anyone; but what the Christians did to so many innocent victims was NOT a film, it was quite real, and it wiped out whole villages across Europe. A good book to read about the witch hunts is "A History of Witchcraft" by Jeffrey B. Russell. There are tons of other such books. Yet people scoff at the figure "9 million"--what, you mean 6 million Jews supposedly were killed in a matter of a few years, and yet 9 million pagans killed over four CENTURIES is exaggerated? 9 million is probably a low number. Anyway, I am not cold-hearted, nor would want anyone to suffer the fate of the Christian in this film--but can't I just enjoy the IDEA of some sort of revenge? One man verses 9 million? Pagans are split over this film's ending--most find it upsetting. But I say, it's like being angry at someone and going home and punching your pillow--no harm done...

I didn't see it either. It was made (or part of it was made) in our area and a friend's magnificent Andalusian stallion was in it, but when I learned the horse's scenes had been edited out, I lost interest. Besides I did understand that it was rather off the wall ... but one cannot realistically expect to be educated by Hollywood ...
