I'm halfway through this book, The Devil - A Biography, by Peter Stanford, and I'm hoping some here have read it to discuss and that others might consider it.
The investigation recounts the history of the Christian devil from his humble beginnings as celestial prosecutor in the Jewish canon to the fully-fledged demigod status that he now holds in 'God-fearing' Christian society today: A fence-straddling semi-dualism masquerading as monotheism. They have their cake and eat it when they raise their devil to near godly status, as clearly as they practise what they do not preach.
This graven image of a diabolical sand-scorched satyr has borrowed from many places over the years, each and every time as a fall-guy for the failings of the church and state, ever lurking and lying to us, causing us to sin, and yet at the same time having already sewn the seeds of sin which caused our capability to sin in the first place. And yet, they would put the burden of responsibility on the first man and woman in their morality narrative, deceived by this radiant angel of seductive voice and celestial intellect. And by inheritance, on us, their children of hereditary heresy. What utter bullshit. It's a Theological cyclic labyrinth, a nightmare where human reason is not welcome.
In any case, this book is definitely helping myself at least to deconstruct the path of perversion of Christianity, even of their own idol of evil in this case. It also touches on the very early origins of such Dualism as exist within the Pantheons of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Canaan and Greece, and how each has had their part to play in the plunder-hoard that is Christianity today.
A very easy, worthwhile read.
