surya namaskara

Yes. Surya Namaskara is the opening sequence for Hatha Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga, although Surya Namaskara comes in two different versions accordingly to the 2 different yoga styles. Surya Namaskara in Hatha is very gentle and flowing - Surya Namaskara in Ashtanga is dynamic and requires more strength.

A good book on Surya Namaskar is the following one:

are the benefits of surya namaskara different from hatha yoga? can it take the place of a full hatha yoga exercise?

Surya Namaskar is more of a warm up sequence for what's to come (such as the static poses...poses that you hold for certain amount of time).

If doing it in the morning, do Surya Namaskar facing East
(Surya = sun, Namaskara = salutation/greeting, Sun Salutations)
