Does powerlifting/weightlifting hinder the effects of yoga?

No. In fact, the stronger you are and the more in shape you are, the easier it will be to do yoga. But unlike athletics, in yoga you don't push yourself.    |

I see. Thanks for your input. I just hate that my hams are tight, so I incorporate plenty of forward bends and leg stretches.

Weightlifting and anyother exercise can increasse your bioelectricity and stimulate another part of your soul. But take your time and don't strain and push yourself. Also if you want internal strength then you may want to try another approach such as Qigong or Tai chi. But if you want to scuplt your body then you can continue with the weightlifting. When doing any kind of weightlifting or exercise always do yoga or strectch your body very well so that the new energy will circulate better and won't cause problems.

Does powerlifting/weightlifting hinder the effects of yoga?

Weightlifting, power lifting...these are excellent and not only strengthen the soul on their own, but greatly enhance the spiritual effects of yoga. I know this from experience as I did intense weightlifting for over 10 years, along with martial arts and some gymnastics. I have found that each discipline gives different energies. The energies from Tai Chi are different from hatha/physical and kundalini yoga. The Tai Chi enhances and adds to the spiritual powers and benefits of yoga. Afterwards, with the Tai Chi, the energies felt and experienced are different than those of yoga; the energy buzz is a bit different, but very powerful in its own way.

ALL athletics are excellent for strengthening the soul, as the soul and body mirror each other. A strong, healthy, flexible body energizes the soul, and enhances the spiritual effects of yoga. In addition, it is very important to stay flexible as much as possible, as weightlifting alone will tighten your muscles to an extent that could lead to injury, let alone create serious energy blocks. The purpose of hatha/physical yoga is to enhance flexibility, and through this, open your joints and nadis to where your life force/vril/chi can flow easily, which is the path to spiritual power the the godhead.

They complement each other nicely. I get a vey similar buzz from both of them, and doing one after the other gives it a synergistic effect. I would start off with yoga then weight lifting. If you can try to add cardio in the beginning. This will lube up your joints with synovial fluids so that your streches feel much more like gliding than actual work. According to a health magazine I read years ago streching properly can increase recovery time by 20%.
