Okay, here I am with another "pitch" for yoga. I found this great book, it was made for overweight people who want to do yoga, but it's good for anybody at all b/c it has over 100 poses that are "doable" for anyone. It is called "Megayoga" by Megan Garcia, I would recommend this book to everyone, especially beginners but anyone who wants to expand on the Hittleman book's poses....

Thanks, Moonshadow. I'll take a look. I'm a beginner at yoga too. I don't have a weight issue but more spinal flexibility is what I'm seeking & I have to pretty much design my own program. (I have a DVD which is just a little too advanced for me at this point and a couple of books which have been quite helpful.)

You're welcome. It is truly a good book for anyone, as it adds postures I did not know about...

Here's a secret on yoga asanas, try doing chakra spining or other chakra work while in a asana that stimulates the chakra. For example crown chakra spinnig while doing a headstand and third eye/6th chakra in any asana which your forehead is on the ground. This adds lots more power.

You could also make a complete program of 7 asanas having to do with the 7 chakras and doing chakra work in each one. Spining the chakra, vibrating the chakra's mantra e.t.c. In other asanas you do some breathing exercise together with the asana like breath of fire or some meditation or vibrate a mantra. Try this one, but instead breath of fire do the foundation meditation:

In a similar way when you do breathing exercises add more things like energy locks, mudras, mantras or visualization.

You empower yourself in more ways than just a simple asana or breathing exercise, it gives faster results and more power. The more ways, the better. I read this in some random kundalini yoga book and i found this very useful.

All of what i said is not for beginners though :(

One of the first yoga books I bought was "The Kundalini Yoga Experience" by Guru Dharam S.Khalsa and Darryl O'Keefe.
It's fairly recent, as well it's very beginner-to-yoga friendly. =)

Hail Satan!

Oh, I just finished trying out this DVD, it is a 3-DVD set that you can from Amazon.com. =D
For a new beginner who can't stretch, and is very inflexible, this DVD is well-priced, slow moving and very clear and informative.

http://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Beginners-DV ... 199&sr=8-3

I saved money on Yoga classes (never went to one) by buying a few Yoga magazines, a Yoga book and this dvd set. You can even choose what routine you want to use, and there's yoga for am and pm.
I focus on my breathing while doing the poses.
First, I watch the dvd (whatever section I choose to learn/work on) then follow along after watching it. Then I do, by memory, the poses I learned, at my own pace and focusing on my breath and stretching.

Hail Satan!

Thanks! This sounds "perfect", especially for those like me who are both beginners at Yoga and who are unable to attend a class and therefore must design our own program.
