could you possibly enter a state in which your body is "asleep" and is resting and recovering , while you meditate , that way you wouldn't waste 8-9 hours a day?
Practice mental falling exercises to lower ur brainwaves. Once u slow down ur mind ur body will automatically enter a deep relaxed state. Advise u to sit crosslegged, but if ur not flexible enough to sit relaxed and comfy tht way just sit straight in a chair until ur able to sit crosslegged.

You may want to look into a technique called lucid dreaming… this is a nice compromise between meditation and sleeping… as well as having defensive capabilities against negative entities!
