My experience with animals is that they communicate telepathically and with emotions. I don't know if they use words. I have read somewhere that they can also communicate with images, but I haven't experienced that yet.
Although one time a crow spoke to me on the astral. They did not use their beak to speak, lol. But they spoke to me in my mind with words. Their voice sounded like rocks grinding together.

The way I see the soul of an ant is kind of like a small weak underdevelopped being comparable to it's manifestation, but it also looks like more of a collection of energy interconnected with the other members of the ant hive, compared to a human soul even the soul of an entire ant hive feels much weaker and much more primal aswell. As I started to awaken my own energy and my own gifts with help of Satan I have started to see more things up to the point I see the differences in the souls of animals and plants and all other things clearly.
Ants and other such beings or even animals can't develop their souls and energies like we can, which is the biggest difference in our evolution.
The size or the appearance of a life form doesn't show a true representation of the creatures soul, for example a whale, which undoubtly has a huge amount of energy in it's body because of it's enormous mass, it's soul iself is ultimatly much weaker and less developed than that of a human.
Don't be afraid that if you kill an insect or a mold that it will give you a bad conscience, but it is like Call_me_something_else said that all life forms have a soul.
One of the most interesting souls I have found on earth are those of beings that don't truly have a life form, atleast not living breathing body, like the soul of a mountain, or an elemental. Elementals specifically are very powerful souls, but they never had a living breathing body, they manifest in the elements, which gives them their name obviously. You can even communicate with them like you can with the souls of the deseased or with our father Satan. The souls of animals however I have never been able to communicate too, they can feel me and har my energy but they don't really speak back because they aren't open enough to be able to, or atleast that is how it looks to me.
