So, usually I meditate sitting cross legged either on my bead or bean bag on the floor. Lately though it's started giving me back pains while I meditate. It's getting extremely annoying and making it very hard to focus. Have any of you had this problem before and what did you do to fix it?

it might be the muscles in your back just getting sore from holding themselves upright for more than they are used to. that happened to be. i use the computer for hours a day in which case i usually slouch, and then my back has to get used to it when i meditate. staying consistent with meditation should remedy this problem

Try laying down when you meditate our sitting in a comfortable chair. See if this has any impact on your back pain.

Yessss, I too had this problem before while meditating, especially when I first started out, I don't know if you have any existing back problems, but for me I was able to solve this with practicing Yoga, alot of stretching out the muscles,I was really stiff then, in time the back pains begin to hurt alot less and went away, I also did consistent meditation at the time. You can do this and see if it helps.

Do some Hatha Yoga. I used to have real problems with this too, then after starting Hatha Yoga, I don't tend to get them any more.

These came to me when I first started the cobra breath, I was raising too much energy and my body couldn't handle it. That was the problem for me

Are you keeping your back strait? it might be hard to do that on a bean bag or bed.

i dont think you should be laying down during meditation unless its absolutely needed - heres why. The whole point of meditation is to enter into a specific state of altered consciousness whereby the right brain hemisphere can be accessed but we can maintain some degree of alertness which is needed to control magic. as i can tell you from personal experience, laying down during meditation combined with the alpha brainwaves associated with a trance state can cause you to fall asleep or, at best, your thoughts to become jumbled and confoluted. Just the other day i tried laying down during some mantra meditation and after a while i had to sit up because i could not recite the mantra straight anymore...

By contrast, i have never had this problem in a traditional back-straight cross-legged position, which is doubtless why the yogis where very strict on NO LAYING DOWN while meditating.

I have the same problem, I cannot sit in those poses for any length of time because my back gets sore. I do all meditations lying down on my bed. It works fine for me and my energies have increased consistently since I started (2.5 yrs)

Thanks for the answers everyone. It appears that I need to focus more on yoga then. This is actually something I don't pay as much attention to as I should.

And I did used to to meditate laying down, but like Anakin said, I found it much easier when I started sitting up. But I won't deny it is much comfier. Maybe when I get my own place (sharing with housemates at the moment) I'll invest in a really comfy chair or something.

I've never had any back problems before, but I also spend a lot of time at the computer and since I don't have a desk and my housemate sold her dining table (she's crazy) I have to sit on my bed with the laptop. So this could be a factor too.
