Here's another theater being played currently. FBI has a case where "terrorism" is involved and there is an iPhone that is locked. The FBI is asking apple by court of law to write software and remove any security protections in order for FBI to crack the phone's password.

Many people in the know-how said that the NSA could crack the phone without the assistance of Apple. So here's an interesting comment:

“Every expert I know believes that NSA could crack this phone,” Clarke said. “They want the precedent that the government can compel a computer device manufacturer to allow the government in.”
And I'm guessing that they are targeting Apple because they know that they comply. They know that they are a giant in the mobile market. They know they have the capital to pursue a legal case. And they know that if they "convince" apple to comply, then no other company would ever think to do differently.
