Yes. There is negative energy, and there is negative circuitry. Freeing the soul means destroying bad karma, which means rewiring your soul, removing bad wiring, bad patterns and programs. Purification removes negative energy.

Both are important and they overlap a bit, but they are different things and both are necessary. Purification is necessary when freeing the soul because freeing the soul releases dross, impurities, like pouring off slag when refining metal. That is why metalworking is an allegory in myth for working on the soul and the chakras.
