Dedication ritual and going into trance

I have to questions.....

1.during the dedication ritual do the candles have to burn completely or just the paper? And if they don't have to burn all the way what do i do with left over candles?

2.I don't understand the instructions on JoS for going into trance that well can some one tell me a more detailed way or show me another way to get into a trance?
