Appearance of the Gods

I'm wondering if the "physical" appearance the Gods show humans have sometimes meaning/reason or are just there to facilitate communication with the simple human mind.
In the case of Zeus, most likely, as He is the Supreme God and was never a mortal, but I wonder if those Gods who evolved from the physical plane just use the more-or-less same appearance they have (or had?) in the physical plane, like I remember one God being described looking half-grey because His planet was going through that process, although I forgot which God was it.

Difficult matter to discuss as I realize most people aren't at the level to physically see the Gods yet, but still worth to ask.

I would say both choices can be true as the Gods and Their energies can be represented in different planes of existence. This along with having an actual appearance.
