This magnificent piece of National Socialist Germany's history was colorized and restored to it's current breathtaking state within only the last couple years. Before that, it had only existed since the mid-80's. Until then, it's footage was considered to be lost or destroyed until a copy surfaced East Germany.
The important significance of this footage is that it was thought to be completely and permanently destroyed by the orders of Adolf Hitler. The footage has scenes that display Hitler and German military officer Ernst Röhm on seemingly very close terms. Eventual later circumstances lead to Hitler having Röhm killed during the Night of the Long Knives in '34. This film and any record of his existence were subsequently erased from history. Or at least that was the attempt, until a copy of the film was found around 50 years later. Leno's own personal copy was thought to be destroyed as well, but later turned up in the UK.
'Victory of Faith' is the first propaganda piece created by filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, later director of the quintessential classic 'Triumph of the Will'. 'Victory'—or 'Der Sieg des Glaubens'—showcases Hitler's Fifth Party Rally, which occurred in Nuremberg from 30 August to 3 September 1933. Other notable appearances exist throughout the film by Julius Streicher, Rudolph Hess, Joseph Goebbels and Hermann Göring.
