You can use any method you want, as long as it is clear in your mind before you start asking questions.

In my experience, it is the energy of the entity you are connecting with. I use the counterclockwise/clockwise method. The Ouja table combined with the pendulum, instead, is quite different, there it is much more likely that the will and/or knowledge of the operator influences the answers.
