Can it be taken as a general rule that you should struggle in life to aquaire the qualities of the sign that your north node is in, and abondon the negative ones that are associted with a sign that your south node is in(negative karma)?
It makes perfect sense to me, and gives lots of clarity for what one should work towards to in life, i think.

In some ways yes, but it should also be understand that we need to work on all areas of our soul and life, not just the placements of the nodes. They can be a guide to where you need to work on, but they shouldn't be seen as the only thing that needs attention.

Kind of... It's more complicated than that.

The way my GD explained it to me is that the North Node is like a beautiful pinwheel firework that one has to see but one can be enchanted by too dangerously. The South Node is like a platform with spikes that become more uneven the more you dig into it, but without it there you'd fall. If you fling yourself into the North Node at ridiculous speeds or don't watch your step you're going to blow up and burn, but if you over rely on the South Node it will begin to dig into your heels and make you bleed, or even crush you.

Looking at Charts of many people I found this to be the truth. The South Node has a very strong tie to someone's karmic mistakes that they keep falling back on, while the North Node can ruin via unthinking ambition and recklessness. However they both also have some extremely important positives.

One woman I read about abandoned her kids from childhood as she was too young to care for them. After she'd gotten her degree and career, the woman readopted them as adolescents quite forcefully after a legal battle with her mother. A few months later she was murdered by her 16 year old twins who went to school afterwards without a care in the world. She had a Gemini South Node at 16 degrees placed in the 4th House. Scary right? That's an extreme example as most people's South Nodes are not that crazy, but still. You can still see some malefic influence from Sagittarius here - she wanted her freedom.

The Nodes can be very tricky and mysterious because as points of the Moon they deal with the 'virgin state' of our soul.

You have to navigate both carefully because both will fling obstacles your way, but the North Node does convey in a sense what you are meant to be going for in this life with difficulty whereas the South Node more conveys the comfort zone and hidden dangers one has to step out of. The House positions are also extremely important here.

The Nodes do have strong undertones of Saturn, but they are not purely malefic like Hinduism claims with Ketu and Rahu.
