Between Now and Then - a poem

Walking through these doors
So many things I’ve never known
But will they see through all these scars to the wounded bird below?

Don’t worry, I have a sword and shield
Train with me and wield with care
Let me show you all the power you have locked away in there

But there are things in the walls
Something keeps on watching me
Please don’t pull me out of here!
I don’t think I can shake off all the fear

How will you know if you’ve never tried to?
You think it’s all so frightening
Let me show you what you’ve left behind when running all this time

No! The light is too blinding
Is it not better to close my eyes and dream of all the things I can’t have?
I’d rather flee and hide!

“Can’t” - is all you say…
You never try to dream outside
Doubt and fear will be your ruin
Don’t give in to the shadows in your mind!

Are you sure there is something trapped deep down inside me?
I feel like I am ever failing
Losing to this never ending frailty

Then come with me
See all those ahead of you?
Once upon a time you know, they all were once stuck here just like you

Then show me how to wield the sword and shield now
But am I not enough?
The mountain keeps on going up!

Burn away all that you knew
There’s more to life than surviving
Laying comfortable in a bed of straw and reading someone else’s story

So I must write my own?
I miss seeing my own face
So long have I raced to be someone I never was!

Go on, it’s not so frightening

Are you sure I won’t fall like before?

No one can tell you where to soar
But take my hand
I am always here if you ever slip and guide you on until you can stand

Then show me and I’ll open my eyes!

I’ve taken your hand
The world awaits down below me
My heart is leaping a million miles
But it’s everything I didn’t know I need…

Do you see it now?
I am you in a year or two
Can you see how you have grown to be someone standing on your own?
