White theatregoers urged not to attend play aimed at black audiences

A theatre has urged white people not to attend a play, arguing that its audience should be “free from the white gaze”.
The Theatre Royal Stratford East, in east London, said that white visitors should not come and watch a performance of Tambo & Bones on 5th of July.
Organisers said they are hosting the one-off “Black Out” event to create a “safe, private” space for an “all-black-identifying audience” to explore race-related issues.
While the theatre’s website stated that “no one is excluded”, promotional material made it clear that white theatregoers are not welcome.
A description for the show read: “A Black Out night is the purposeful creation of an environment in which an all-black-identifying audience can experience and discuss an event in the performing arts, film, and cultural spaces – free from the white gaze.”
The UK’s first black police and crime commissioner (PCC) condemned the event, warning that it set a “poor and dangerous precedent”.
Festus Akinbusoye, the PCC for Bedfordshire, “strongly urged” the theatre and the play’s director to cancel its Black Out event.

“Society is richer and stronger when an understanding of each other’s cultures and stories are shared and heard,” he said.
“However I believe the Black Out concept runs contrary to this education and enrichment ethos.”
He added: “As a lover of theatre performances – Hamilton being a recent one I attended – it was a great experience being able to share this with people of all races and cultures.
“Despite its majority black or visibly ethnic minority cast, I would not have watched it if it had been a ‘Black Out’ performance.
“This also sets a poor and dangerous precedent, in my view, and is not something I would support.
“I would strongly urge the organisers of this to seriously reconsider their decision in light of the message it sends, and the precedent it sets.”
Samuel Kasumu, a former Number 10 race adviser currently running to be the Conservative candidate for next year’s London mayoral election, said that he endorsed Mr Akinbusoye’s comments “100 per cent”.
However, the Black Out event has received the backing of Sir Trevor Phillips, the broadcaster and former politician, who described it as “completely lawful”.
“I think it’s fine, for several reasons,” he said. “There is not a ‘ban’ on white attendees. It’s completely lawful. It is one night out of many. There are other performances designated for specific audiences.
“The content might be interesting in different ways for audiences from different backgrounds and would probably be reacted to differently by a predominantly black audience. To be honest, if I’m around, I think I might go along to see how it works.”

Tambo & Bones, which opened in the US in 2022, explores 300 years of African American history through its eponymous characters, businessman Tambo and hustler Bones.
The play is split into three parts. The first shows the pair’s misfortunes as minstrels before they become rappers and then members of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Tambo & Bones has received lukewarm reviews Stateside, with The New York Times saying its satire on racism and capitalism has “little force behind it”.
The Los Angeles Times said that the lyrics of the rap concert, held halfway, “were often lost in a blur of sound”.
Matthew Xia, the director of the UK run of the play, which costs up to £37.50 per ticket, said it was “imperative” that the Black Out performance went ahead.
In promotional material for the play, he wrote: “Over the last few years, a number of playwrights and directors in the US and the UK have created private and safe spaces for black theatregoers to experience productions that explore complex, nuanced race-related issues.
“I felt that with a play like Tambo & Bones which unpicks the complexity of black performance in relation to the white gaze, it was imperative that we created such a space.”
Theatre defends event
A spokesman for the Theatre Royal Stratford East said: “Black Out night is an initiative which started on Broadway and has been taken up by several London theatres, the spirit of which is congregation, celebration and healing.
“Tambo & Bones, staged at Stratford East, is a bold new play, a satire which actively explores race and what it is to be black.
“We have chosen to embrace this initiative for one performance, during the play’s month-long run, as a space for black audiences to experience the play as a community.”
Mr Xia has been approached for comment.

Ottawa's National Arts Theatre is hosting a 'Black Out' performance of the play Is God Is, a revenge story about two sisters
Two major Canadian theatres have sparked outrage by announcing exclusive performances for an “all black-identifying audience”.
In Ottawa, the National Arts Theatre – one of Canada’s biggest taxpayer-funded performing arts organisations – will hold its first ever “Black Out” night on 17 February, at the 897-seat Babs Asper Theatre.
The organisation is putting on a performance of “Is God Is” – a revenge story about two African-American sisters written in 2018.
A similar event is planned by the Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto on 9 February, with two plays: “Okay you can stop now” and “X and Da Spirit” – which was written about the author’s experiences during the Black Lives Matter protests.
According to the Toronto theatre, the purpose of the events is to facilitate “a safe environment for a personal and intimate discussion on the work made and performed by black artists”. It added that it welcomed everyone who self-identifies as black to attend this performance.
However, while white attendees could not be banned from attending the show on a Black Out night, the theatre made clear they would not be welcome.
“If someone identifies as a non-black person and requests to enter the room, a member of our team will be present to speak to that person.
“We try our best to have this labour land on a non-black staff member and we will have non-black front-of-house, leadership or technical and production team members present in the lobby to help de-escalate such situations.
“We will also specify across our ticketing and show pages, social media and other communications that the Black Out Night performance is dedicated to black audiences.
‘There will be no checkpoints’
In Ottawa, the National Arts Centre said: “No one is turned away at the door. There will be no checkpoints for Black Out Night ticket holders and no questions will be asked about the identity, race or gender of anyone”.
A non-black member of staff will be on hand to have “a chat” with anyone who seeks to defy the admissions policy.
Black Out nights started in 2019 with a performance on Broadway where the event was pitched as enabling black theatregoers to enjoy events “free from the white gaze”.
The two theatres in Canada are the latest to take up the idea.
Reaction to the Black Out nights has been hostile. Columnist Brian Lilley blasted the move in the Toronto Sun.
“What is bothersome is the apparent segregationist appeal,” he wrote.
“Rather than encouraging black theatregoers, in what is a mostly white but slowly diversifying national capital to attend, the NAC makes it sound like this event is only for black patrons.”
But Shifter, a Canadian magazine celebrating black culture, disagreed.
“Any attempt at carving out a dedicated space for racialised communities is often labelled by some as ‘racist’ and counterproductive to this Utopian kumbaya idea of all people getting along (despite the fact many individuals still don’t like Black people; even among people of colour).”
Racial discrimination has been illegal in Canada for decades. The first legislation was passed in Ontario and Saskatchewan in the 1940s and nationally in 1977, with the Human Rights Act.

I would be 100% OK with this if it was in Africa and they had a town/city/whatever which had the closest theatre (for you Americans, I do not mean cinema) for 100 miles and they agreed that they wanted Black-only audiences either always or for certain films. Fine. With this being in White areas - not fine. Dear reader, whether you are Black, Asian, White, or (((something else))) - let me come into your home and take over at your expense and force you to do as I wish. You most-certainly would accept that bending over in wilful submission. Don't think about bothering to deny so.

A young family evicted from their home and moved to a hotel has accused the council of "abuse" and "neglect".
The mum-of-two said the young family was evicted from their housing association home but are now in a room she described as "not suitable to meet the children's basic needs". Nicole Barlow, 24, said they lost their home after the private landlord, who the housing association leased the property from, decided to sell.
The family-of-four was given just two months to vacate the property in Ellesmere Port. But Mrs Barlow, a support worker for adults with learning difficulties, said there were no other suitable council properties in the town.

"It seems like we're being punished. I feel guilty I was plodding along not realising people were left like this. It's abuse from the council. If it was me who decided to keep my kids in one room day in day out with no proper facilities and nowhere for them to play they would remove my children, but since it's the council they can get away with it."

On Friday 21 May, while walking her dog, Amanda, 27, from Umeå, in Sweden, was beaten by a group of "young men". She justified wanting to speak out about the incident, suggesting that in these cases, victims should rather remain silent.
The badly injured woman said she hoped that the culprits – foreigners, according to her – would be arrested so that other people do not suffer the same fate. “It’s not just for me, but so that others don’t get hurt,” she told Swedish news outlet Samnytt.

These were either the same article, or two different articles, about migrants being put on "do not rape" courses, after which some went out and raped again; and a migrant saying something like "I came to fuck the Women" and was arrested and in court. I don't know if the article gave the verdict/sentence or not.

Swedish Gov’t Kicks Family Out Of Housing To Make Room For Refugees

The Swedish government has issued a notice to a family living in public housing that they must vacate the premises in August to make room for migrants.
Uffe Rustan told Swedish newspaper Mitti that he had been informed over the phone by his local municipality that he would have to take his family and get out of the building by August.
“I was evicted from my home over the phone. When I asked for the reason, he said that people come from other countries. He left the news and basically just said have a nice weekend,” Rustan said.

The trailer for the documentary makes a clear reference to Cleopatra’s skin colour, where one commentator explicitly says, “I don’t care what they tell you in school. Cleopatra was black.”
