Apparently according to these sources the historical Germanic societies used "homosexual" as a derogatory insult that would be punishable by death if said. But also it means other stuff too... like wizard.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nīþ...r, strodinn, and,"being a sorcerer's friend."

In Germania ( book ) written by Tacitus it says the same stuff. But it also says they punished sodomites??????? Is there sth im missing? Werent the Norse and Germanic people originally pagan? Why would a pagan society follow jewish laws and carry out jewish punishments???

In Viking societies, there was a word that sometimes was called ARGR and sometimes called RAGR. And this was the worst insult that anybody could possibly say to anybody, and it was such an extremely negative thing to call somebody that it would be justified to kill the person for saying it.

In their laws where murder is killing somebody unjustifiably, or trying to lie about it or hide it. If somebody was killed, the one who did it had to go confess it to somebody within a maximum of either 3 or 4 houses being passed while walking away, and explain a good reason why it needed to be done. Walking any further than that without confessing means that it was a murder and was unjustified, and now there is death penalty for the murderer. But there were many situations where it was justifiable and was allowed, like in self defence. And being called ARGR/RAGR was a situation where you could basically get self defence against the guy who called you it and would be completely justified to kill him.

When talking about a woman, Argr/Ragr means a whore. A woman who goes around having sex with many people. This was an extremely bad thing to do in Viking society because the entire purpose of their culture was for having strong families. Being strong to protect and provide for their families was the greatest thing, and betraying your family by being a whore was one of the worst things somebody could do. And if the reason for doing it is because the man is not good, he was abusive or something like that, the Viking society was one of the only ones at the time where people could choose to get divorced. So if she actually had a good reason to be doing that, she could have just got divorced instead.

But Argr/Ragr was not as often used for women. It was mostly used for men, and for men it means homosexual. Especially talking about the guy on the bottom. A homosexual man was considered one of the weakest and worst men because he is not having a family. He is betraying society and nature by not raising any children, and especially for not creating strong children. Because they lived mostly in small villages with pretty low number of people, so it was the most important thing to create a strong family, raise strong and healthy children. Because they are the next generation. They help with all the work that needs to be done, and they grow to replace the old people who are dying. So anybody who is not creating strong children and training them physically and mentally to be the best that they can be, he is putting the entire village in a very serious risk by leaving them unprotected because there are now less strong men to protect everyone. And also putting the population at risk of going extinct by not having enough children to replace the people who die. And also less people to help with all the work that needs to be done.

Everything in Viking society was entirely about what creates the strongest and healthiest families. And the village is the extension of the family, like the larger version of it. Raising children to be strong, smart, and having many different skills with farming, fishing/hunting, building tools and weapons, building houses, and being strong fighters. And having as many people as possible in the strongest and healthiest way. With so much work that needs to be done every day, it was a crime to be a lazy or weak person who does not help with anything and does nothing all day. And a gay man who doesn't have any children was the perfect example of a weak and lazy man, because he does not want to do the work of raising a family.

There have been thousands of different societies for thousands of years, and spread all over the world. It is a mistake to assume they all had the exact same opinions about everything.
