Expert advisor points out that the virus detected in Beijing is 'extremely contagious', more than that of Wuhan
Authorities have already initiated a plan to conduct 90,000 daily tests after the new outbreak detected.
China's Ministry of Health has reported on Tuesday 40 new cases of coronavirus, 27 of them detected in Beijing, after the new spillover focus originating at a wholesale market in Fengtai district, southwest of the capital, which has already caused 107 contagions since Thursday, so the authorities have already initiated a plan to conduct 90,000 tests per day.
Yang Zhaqiu, deputy director of a biology department at Wuhan University, notes that the virus is "probably more infectious" than that detected in Wuhan, the provincial capital of Hubei, where COVID-19 began to spread. "The Beijing virus is extremely contagious, apparently much more than it was detected in Wuhan," Yang says in statements to the Global Times, adding that, in his view, "this is an outbreak imported from abroad."
Meanwhile, expert Wang Genghua adds to the same newspaper that there is now a "very clear understanding" of the virus compared to the time it began to spread in Wuhan and that "the population is aware" of the measures needed to tackle it. "Beijing will not be a new Wuhan, but if the number of cases continues to rise and the virus spreads to neighboring communities, more drastic measures could be imposed and the city sealed," he added.
On Sunday, Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chunlan has already advanced that "decisive measures" should be taken to stop the spread of the new outbreak, and called for "strict epidemiological investigations" and "comprehensive tracking" to identify and control the source of infection.
He also urged The Petnhus communities to do all they could to detect confirmed, suspected cases, patients with fevers who could be carriers and close contacts, and quarantine them.
