Focus. Time and energy. When you are starting from scratch with these practices (healing, programmed energy, etc) you may (or may not) feel that they are less powerful than you desired.
The same way if you start to imagine your aura, and clean it, nightly before bed, that you will be able to visualize it and clean it more easily after even a few days (repetition), you will find a lot of things can work this way. Your intentions are known by the ether. Supreme confidence in what your doing is also necessary - often times our minds are divided.. even people who believe in god usually have doubt or worry in their mind somewhere that they're fooling themselves or wrong.
When your mind (and your beliefs and thoughts) and your intentions are concentrated, and not divided against themselves, you are likely to possess, and be able to use, more power. You might find that you don't have this problem of being divided, and that you are absolute already in what you feel and want.. this is good, but be certain that you are right..
It seems nobody completely understands the universe. Even minds without TRAINED power sometimes will observe a desired thing, or desired things, manifesting with ease. Whether this is coincidence or fate, or the will of the gods or the universe, nobody could know for sure.
Don't look past the fact that beyond trying to do magical workings, you have a physical power to help your friend. Share positivity with them.. I'm sure you are, but don't forget that that is equally important - being there for them and contracting good, loving, healthy energy into their soul through the simple means of talking and other basic interactions.
Concentrated things are more powerful.. so, do everything in your power, and you will be more likely to reach your goal when you have come at it from more than just one angle.. I'm not sure if that applies to everything, but in this case with your friend it does. Let people you care for know, or at least let them feel, that you love them, even if you can't or don't want to say it. Do things to make your friend feel happy.
And then ultimately don't fear a bad outcome.. because that would probably be a waste of your time.
That raises a question in my mind, considering what I wrote here..:
If you don't know, there is a scale of 2 polarities that everything you do can be placed on.. like a line, with Fear on one side and Love on the other..
Often times around here I get the impression that the consensus among Satanists is to try and exist in a pure love form. That is concentration through the omission of fear..
I'm not advocating this, but merely wondering.. and didn't want to make a separate post because I like the context that already exists here within the thread and within my post, but what would happen if you combined equally the two opposites? Do they null each other out? Do they instead generate a strong, singular power when combined? Does one overpower the other? It's quite relative and seems to go beyond the realm of human comprehension, unless my mind is just too weak to understand it..
That reminds me of this quote from the Al Jilwah, "I have allowed the creation of four substances, four times and four corners".. Duality seems sometimes to imply 2^2 possibilities..
Also I hope I have not offended you by talking about something not pertinent to your original post. I saw it as a chance to gain wisdom, wisdom that could possibly even help you reach your goal.
