Personally I go into a void meditation state, where I clean my mind and focus on the question I want answers to while shuffling my deck, then I randomly pick the top card, and usually look up it's definition online, and weave up the most likely outcome of the situation based on what card I got...

If you have read around the JoS then you would know that Yes, usually your astral chackras should be opened, and working, otherwise getting the full experience is either difficult or impossible :)
